Medicaid is a United States program that helps low-income households get the healthcare coverage that they need. Medicaid covers a wide range of healthcare services–from visits to a general physician to long-term care in the event of surgery. However, when it comes to dental care, there are a few caveats. For instance, some states do provide dental care to children registered with the program. But, for adults, this might not always be true. It really depends on the state if people over the age of 21 get dental benefits.

Some dental clinics accept Medicaid, but like all healthcare centers, this differs from clinic to clinic, place to place, and dentist to dentist. So, you might have to do some digging to find the right dentist. You can do several Google searches, but it may take some time to find the one you’re looking for, but don’t worry, you will find them eventually.

How Does Medicaid Give you Coverage?

Medicaid offers dental benefits to children and older individuals, but how they determine who gets these benefits changes from individual to individual.

First, you will have to visit a dentist or orthodontist who will evaluate you and review your previous dental records to determine if you qualify. When it comes to dental braces, this becomes especially true, as the dentist has to prove that these braces are medically necessary before the patient receives full coverage. (When we say “medically necessary” we mean dental braces that might correct trauma, impacted teeth, or speech problems.) Additionally, the program only offers full coverage for those under the age of 21.

What Do You Do If You Cannot Get Insurance Coverage?

If you are an adult who does not have coverage or a child who has been denied it, there are always dentists to help you out. At the very least, you can negotiate with them to find an agreeable solution.

For instance, there are specialized centers that provide affordable dental care services. They also ensure that you keep up your appointments in any way possible, accepting Medicaid and whatever other insurance plans you might have. Sometimes, you might even be eligible for the discounts they offer.

So, don’t be disheartened. There are always options. There are always people who are willing to help you. You just have to go looking for them.
